War at Home
NZ War Fortifications
Local people are probably aware of the WW2 machine gun post on the banks of the Rangitata River. A small concrete slot can be seen on the right hand bank as you cross the Rangitata bridge driving north on SH1. There is a concrete bunker around the back that you can access, and it was manned by soldiers during WW2 incase the Japanese tried to invade via the river.
There are other fortifications that can still be seen today across NZ, and here is a link to a website that contains information on this one and others.
Official WW100 website
A really amazing resource on New Zealand's contribution to WW1 is the official WW100 website. There is so much valuable information on this site, so you might need to visit it more than once...
